Creation of New Self-Help Groups (SHGs)

By Mahimai Raja A S | Project Leader

As part of Dalit Solidarity’s ongoing Women Empowerment Program, two new Self-Help Groups (SHGs) were successfully formed to support marginalized women in achieving financial independence, social dignity, and community leadership. This initiative reflects our commitment to empowering women—especially from disadvantaged backgrounds—by promoting collective action, savings habits, and access to livelihood opportunities. The formation of these SHGs marks a significant step forward in fostering women-led development and strengthening the local community through mutual support and skill-building.

The main objectives of creating these SHGs were:

  • To encourage economic independence among women through regular savings and credit practices.
  • To promote entrepreneurship and self-reliance among Dalit and rural women.
  • To provide a platform for women to share experiences, build confidence, and participate in community decision-making.
  • To connect women with training programs, microfinance opportunities, and government welfare schemes.

The event was held on October 2, 2025 at Odiyathur, with the participation of community leaders, local women, and Dalit Solidarity representatives. A total of 35 women came forward to form two Self-Help Groups, each consisting of 17 members. The program began with an introduction by Elizabeth, who explained the purpose and benefits of SHGs. Resource persons conducted awareness sessions on the importance of savings, internal lending, record keeping, and financial discipline. The women were also introduced to future training plans on tailoring, handicrafts, small business management, and digital literacy.

The creation of these two SHGs has ignited a sense of confidence, unity, and empowerment among women who were previously excluded from formal economic systems. In the long term, these groups are expected to evolve into self-sustaining micro-enterprises, improving the living standards of their members and their families.

Dalit Solidarity expresses sincere gratitude to all donors, community organizers, and volunteers who made this initiative possible. Their guidance and continued support are vital to helping these women achieve economic stability and social empowerment. A special thanks to the local leaders and trainers who facilitated awareness sessions and motivated women to take ownership of their growth and future.
