This project will empower rural Indigenous Mayan women by providing 505 hens and 101 roosters, training in poultry production and entrepreneurship, and workshops to provide community support and leadership. This project will allow the women to have autonomy and economic independence, which will help against domestic abuse faced by over 50% of Indigenous women in Guatemala.
In rural Guatemala, a significant number of women have few opportunities to generate their own income sustainably, which maintains high levels of economic dependence on male figures and limits their ability to make decisions about family and productive resources. There is also a limited participation of women in community leadership spaces, management of economic initiatives and collective decision-making, reducing their chances of influencing issues that affect their lives and communities.
This project will provide economic empowerment and leadership. The livelihoods of 101 women will be strengthened through the delivery of family poultry modules (505 hens and 101 roosters), training in poultry production, and 25 agricultural promoters will participate in 10 workshops to provide community support. 10 training workshops will be held for women leaders who participate in community decision-making spaces and technical support and follow up visits will provide ongoing support.
The poultry modules will continue to generate benefits after the financing ends, contributing to improved nutrition and diversified income. The women will receive tools to reinvest part of the income earned from the sale of eggs, poultry, and other products in the replacement and strengthening of their production units, ensuring their continuity without relying on new external support. The beneficiaries will remain involved in ARMIS meetings, trainings, and other community initiatives.
