Dear Patron,
I am pleased to share this progress report on the Batwa Empowerment Project, an initiative dedicated to supporting vulnerable Batwa families and individuals in Rwanda through education, improved living conditions, health support, skills development, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The project was developed in response to the significant social and economic challenges experienced by many Batwa families. The initiative seeks to support approximately 1,000 Batwa individuals by improving access to education, strengthening literacy, supporting children and young people, promoting skills development, and creating opportunities for families to generate sustainable income. The project also seeks to address basic needs related to housing, health, sanitation, and overall well-being.
To date, $789 has been raised toward the project's $30,000 funding goal, representing approximately 2.6% of the total amount required. This leaves a funding gap of $29,211. Because of the limited resources currently available, the project has not yet been able to implement all of the planned activities at the intended scale.
The needs identified through community engagement include limited educational opportunities, inadequate housing, economic vulnerability, limited access to livelihood opportunities, and challenges related to health and basic living conditions. These challenges are interconnected and can affect children's education, family stability, health, and the ability of households to improve their economic situation.
Education is one of the project's major priorities. The project aims to help Batwa children and adults overcome barriers to education through school-related support, educational materials, literacy activities, skills development, and opportunities for talented young people. Supporting education is viewed as an important foundation for creating greater opportunities for future generations.
The project also seeks to improve living conditions for families experiencing inadequate housing. Where resources permit, the initiative will explore practical forms of housing assistance, including small-scale shelter improvements, household rehabilitation, and support for families facing particularly difficult conditions. Any housing interventions will be developed according to available resources and community needs.
Health and well-being are also important components of the project. Activities may include health education, hygiene and sanitation awareness, nutrition education, and connections to available health services. The project aims to help families improve their knowledge and ability to address preventable health and well-being challenges.
Economic empowerment is another important priority. The project aims to support Batwa families in developing sustainable sources of income rather than relying solely on short-term assistance. Depending on available resources and community interests, potential activities may include small livestock projects, agriculture, sewing and tailoring, small-scale businesses, vocational training, and other income-generating activities that are appropriate to the local context.
Particular attention will be given to children, young people, women, and families experiencing the greatest vulnerability. The project seeks to ensure that assistance is provided in a manner that respects the dignity, participation, and priorities of the Batwa community.
The project also recognizes the importance of community participation. Batwa community members will be involved in identifying priorities, discussing possible interventions, and helping determine which activities are most appropriate and sustainable. This approach is intended to ensure that support responds to actual community needs rather than relying solely on outside assumptions.
The current funding situation remains the project's greatest challenge. With only $789 raised out of the $30,000 goal, additional financial support is urgently needed to begin and expand practical interventions. The remaining $29,211 would provide an opportunity to move from limited planning and community engagement toward more substantial implementation.
Financial contributions can support different aspects of the project, including education, livelihood development, housing assistance, health and sanitation activities, educational materials, skills development, and community-based activities. Partnerships can also provide valuable technical expertise, training, materials, equipment, or other forms of support.
As funding becomes available, the project will prioritize practical and achievable interventions, document activities, monitor progress, and provide updates to donors and partners. Transparency and accountability will remain important principles throughout implementation.
The long-term vision of the Batwa Empowerment Project is to contribute to improved educational opportunities, better living conditions, stronger livelihoods, improved health awareness, and greater social and economic inclusion for Batwa families.
Although the project is currently underfunded, the needs remain significant and the opportunity for positive change is substantial. We therefore respectfully invite individuals, organizations, foundations, and partners to support this initiative and help us reach more Batwa families and individuals.
Every contribution can help us take another step toward creating opportunities for education, dignity, self-reliance, and a more secure future for the Batwa community.
We sincerely thank you for your attention, compassion, and continued support.
Sincerely,
Jean Damascene Uwizeyimana
