Introduction

The Desai Foundation continues its mission to empower communities by equipping women with technical skills to meet the demands of the renewable energy sector. Rising electricity costs, growing environmental concerns, and government incentives have created a perfect opportunity to train women in solar energy and electric vehicle (EV) maintenance. This report highlights progress made from August to November 2024, focusing on creating economic opportunities and advancing sustainable practices in rural India.

Geographic Scope and Beneficiaries

Locations:
The program targets Gehunkheda and Bairagad Chichli villages in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Surveys with local stakeholders indicate significant demand for solar and EV-related skills in these areas.

Demographics:
The initiative focuses on women and adolescent girls aged 18-35, fostering self-reliance and economic independence. By bridging the skill gap in renewable energy and EV maintenance, the program helps women achieve personal growth while uplifting their communities.

Key Achievements (August-November 2024)

 Successful Completion of Inaugural Batches:

  • First batches for solar and EV training concluded with 50 women trained—25 in solar panel installation and maintenance and 25 in EV operation and maintenance.
  • Internships and Employment:
  • 19 women from the solar program are interning with local solar dealerships in Bhopal, gaining hands-on experience.
  • 14 graduates of the EV training program have secured internships with Bhopal-based EV dealerships.
  • Employment Milestones:
  • 5 graduates have secured permanent employment, earning an average monthly income of INR 8,000.
  • Skill Building for Livelihoods:
  • Focused workshops and on-the-job exposure provided a strong mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

 Program Goals and Future Plans

  1. Income Generation:
Equip women to earn a sustainable livelihood by installing, and maintaining solar panels and servicing EV rickshaws.
  2. Sustainability and Green Economy:
    • Contribute to the global transition toward renewable energy.
    • Foster resilience against climate adversities by empowering women as change-makers in green technologies.
  3. Community Outreach:
    • Expand awareness campaigns to more villages in Madhya Pradesh.
    • Increase enrollment for the EV program in the next quarter.
  4. Impact Measurement:
    • Monitor job placements or self-employment rates among trainees.
    • Track the number of renewable energy installations completed by program participants.

Conclusion

The Solar and EV Skills Training Programs have demonstrated measurable progress in empowering women in rural India. By equipping them with specialized knowledge and practical expertise, the programs are creating pathways for economic independence and community development. With significant achievements in enrollment, skill-building, and infrastructure, we are on track to meet our goals of fostering a sustainable green economy.

These initiatives not only address immediate community needs but also lay a foundation for long-term impact, enhancing resilience against climate adversities and enabling women to contribute meaningfully to the renewable energy sector. As we continue to expand and refine these programs, our focus remains on delivering sustainable solutions that empower individuals and uplift communities.

This report underscores the importance of innovative, community-driven efforts in creating meaningful change. Together, we are building a future that aligns economic opportunities with environmental stewardship.
