Empowering Women with EV Rickshaw Skill Training Program
07/30/2024
Introduction:
In India, the rising costs of electricity, combined with government incentives for renewable energy, are fueling a significant demand for solar energy. This growing interest presents a unique opportunity for the Desai Foundation's Solar Program to make a meaningful impact as our program not only meets market demands but also fosters economic independence and environmental sustainability. By addressing the needs identified by the community and leveraging the available incentives, The Desai Foundations Solar Skills training program aims to support the adoption of solar technology, and contribute to a more sustainable future for communities in rural India.
Geographic scope:
The Desai Foundation has conducted surveys and interviews with local stakeholders, including community members, businesses, and government officials, that reveal a significant demand for solar energy installations in residential areas and farms around the villages of Gehunkheda and Bairagad Chichli in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh India.
Benificiaries:
In these villages the program targets local women and adolescent girls aged 18-35. This demographic is selected for their potential to achieve self-employment and economic independence through specialized training in renewable energy and EV maintenance. By equipping local women and girls with such skills, the program aims to enhance their economic stability and contribute to community development.
Achievements:
From April to June of this year, we have successfully completed several key phases of our Solar Skills program, laying a strong foundation for the program's continued success. This period saw the completion of crucial tasks such as infrastructure setup and resource planning, ensuring that our training facilities are well-equipped to handle the technical demands of the program. We also finalized the curriculum, which has been carefully developed to provide comprehensive and practical training in solar energy systems. Additionally, we conducted an extensive mobilization and enrollment campaign, reaching out to the community through targeted meetings and door-to-door awareness efforts. This approach has been instrumental in engaging local residents and encouraging their participation in the program. As a result of these efforts, we have successfully mobilized 30 beneficiaries for solar training, marking a significant achievement in our goal to empower local communities with valuable skills in renewable energy.
Goals of our EV program:
Vision: Our vision is to empower women in environmentally vulnerable communities with cutting-edge skills that enable them to thrive in a changing world. We aspire to offer these women opportunities for income generation, enhance their capacity to adapt to climate challenges, and enable them to play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development.
