Girls with disabilities in Congo are vulnerable to sexual exploitation, violence and drug abuse, and often face discrimination at all levels. This project provides support within our organization to approximately 47 girls with disabilities through training in social entrepreneurship and provides a warm home to 26 girls with disabilities. If and when it is safe to do so, ODDPH will try to economically reintegrate each girl in a sustainable way.
It is estimated that more than 17% of the population in the DRC live with a disability. Many are excluded or their families have abandoned them. Children with disabilities often find themselves isolated in the family and in society, which makes them vulnerable to abuse and stigma. Girls are particularly vulnerable in this environment and are often sexually exploited, resulting in unwanted pregnancies without anyone responsible.
ODDPH supports girls with disabilities from their first visit to our transit center (short term). We provide them with an environment that facilitates self-esteem, security and the girls receive entrepreneurial training for their empowerment, friendship and individual support.
In total, the project supports more than 50 girls with disabilities each quarter in Goma and Rutshuru, helping them build a hopeful future. ODDPH offers them an escape from a life of despair and an opportunity to improve their future prospects. Where possible, we work with each girl's family and community to overcome socio-economic barriers and address the stigma surrounding girls with disabilities to enable inclusion.
