Empower Women Scientists in Developing Countries

Dear Friends and Supporters,

At Apadrina la Ciencia, we believe that the true power of science lies not only in discovery but in its ability to empower every member of society. As we continue our mission to support women scientists in developing countries, we want to share with you how we are expanding our horizons to ensure our projects have the visibility and funding they deserve. We believe it is essential for you, our dedicated GlobalGiving family, to be informed about these efforts, as you are an integral part of our strategy.

To achieve our goals, we have recently embarked on an inspiring cooperation project alongside the Fundación Telefónica, focused on science outreach, technology and volunteer engagement.

This cooperation is especially meaningful for us, as Fundación Telefónica, their volunteers and Apadrina la Ciencia are longstanding partners. Our journey began in 2018 when we joined forces to achieve a Solidarity Challenge. Together, a group of scientists and dedicated volunteers designed, created, and published the book "Todos Somos Científicos" ("We Are All Scientists"). Today, we are proud to share that this book has reached its 4th edition, with over 4,500 copies sold, raising more than 70,000 euros to support scientific research projects. Volunteers are a fundamental pillar enabling NGOs to achieve their missions and reach their goals; to them, we extend our deepest gratitude.

Building on this strong relationship, we have recently proposed a new outreach initiative entitled “Science and Technology Accesible to Everyone”. One of the key activities of this proposal will take place on May 22^nd in Madrid, during the International Telefónica Volunteering Day, a global celebration of social commitment and collective action. This partnership is designed to bridge the gap between complex research and the general public, ensuring that scientific knowledge becomes a friendly and accessible tool for everyone.

The activity will be structured around three science outreach books developed by Apadrina la Ciencia. The above named “Todos Somos Científicos”, which promotes handson experimentation; “Estrellas Científicas”, which highlights women scientists as visible and inspiring role models; and “Ciencia o Pseudociencia”, which provides practical tools to critically assess scientific information and combat misinformation. Together, Telefónica volunteers and researchers from Apadrina la Ciencia, will guide participants through interactive activities designed to inspire curiosity, confidence and critical thinking.

Initiatives like this one allow us to bring science closer to society, raise awareness about women in science, and generate additional resources to support scientific projects and women researchers in developing countries. All funds raised through GlobalGiving and complementary initiatives are fully reinvested in scientific and educational projects, ensuring a clear and lasting social impact. By making science "kind" and accessible, we remove the fear of the unknown and replace it with a curiosity that fuels future research.
