This project aims to provide three days empowerment training & distribution of menstrual hygiene Kits targeting 50 fully blind/highly visually impaired women & girls (mostly unemployed) -in 2 groups. The key purpose is to build confidence of the beneficiaries so that they may live their lives to their highest potential -filled with dignity & independence. Thru the project, the beneficiaries will have improved access in education, employment, & other essential services.
Roughly 1 million Nepali, are fully blind, & of these about 50% are women & girls. These women & girls often face unique discriminations & marginalization. Women & girls with visually impairment are more vulnerable to gender-based violence, sexual abuse, & discrimination. Those who acquire blindness later in their life, from disaster or accidents, have additional problems as they encounter trauma, low self-confidence, inferiority complex, as well as numbers of attitudinal barriers.
The 4 components of the project- 1) Learning Sessions (Socio-psychological, Legal, law enforcement, story sharing, etc., ; 2) Individual/group counseling, pair support, mentorship sessions; 3) Orientation on Fight-back/self-defense to help identify the aspects like "good touch/bad touch, gender-based violence/abuse"; 4) Handover of menstrual hygiene Kits. Technical support from facilitators/expert from sectors such as legal, law enforcement (police's women cell), & health/hygiene will be taken.
The project will impart necessary skills for the holistic development. It will not only enable the beneficiaries to protect from violence & abuse, but also provide knowledge on how to report, & go for legal remedy, if violence occurs. The project will also help in the mainstreaming process for the visually impaired. We sincerely hope that the beneficiaries will have better opportunities to participate in all aspects of society including education, employment, & other personal/social happenings.
