Empowering Sudan's Grassroot Women, Building Peace

Following the outbreak of war in April 2023, Al-Tadamon lost its institutional support from the National Health Insurance Fund and came under increased pressure after El Daein Teaching Hospital was targeted, severely reducing health capacity in the city. To address the urgent need for reliable power for emergency obstetric care, a fully integrated solar power system was installed, comprising solar panels, a lithium battery with an expected lifespan of 10 to 15 years, and an inverter to power medical equipment. Installation was completed in May 2026 and the unit is now fully operational.

The intervention has eased the suffering of the community by restoring the ability of doctors to perform Caesarean sections in a safe and stable environment, eliminating life-threatening interruptions caused by power cuts, and has maintained essential maternal health services for women, including displaced women, while easing pressure on the remaining health facilities. The centre continues to serve all communities without discrimination. 

Implementation took place under difficult conditions marked by logistical constraints, high transport costs to El Daein, security restrictions on movement, and ongoing risks to health facilities.

In addition to the clinical support, the fund also was used to acquire and distribute dignity kits to displaced women and new mothers as part of integrated protection and reproductive health response. This activity has now stopped due to lack of funding, leaving a critical unmet need.

To build on its impact, we request further support to maintain the solar system, provide essential medical supplies, support health workers, strengthen mental health and psychosocial support and protection networks for women, and crucially, resume distribution of dignity kits.
