Emergency Solar Power for Maternal Healthcare

By Doreen Kainza | Programme Manager

We were truly grateful for GlobalGiving’s generous emergency grant of $20,000 to KACE. This support was immediately used to help alleviate the suffering of those affected by the war, particularly women and children. A needs assessment was carried out in close collaboration with Emergency Response Rooms on the ground, and it established that rehabilitation of the women’s department at El Daein Hospital was the urgent need.

El Daein Teaching Hospital, located in the capital of East Darfur, Sudan, is a major medical facility that was rendered non-functional following a devastating drone attack on 20 March 2026. At least 64 to 70 people were killed, including children, patients, and health workers, with over 100 others injured. The attack caused severe damage to the paediatric, maternity, and emergency departments, shutting down the primary referral hospital for the region. As a result, the hospital went completely out of service, halting medical care for over two million people in East Darfur. After the hospital was targeted, its services were dispersed to several centers, including Al-Tadamon Health Center, which required comprehensive rehabilitation.

This project responded to that crisis by providing electrical power through a solar energy system for the cesarean section operating ward at Al-Tadamon Health Center to ensure continuous operation of medical equipment during surgical procedures. The key goals were to restore operation of the cesarean section operating ward, provide an alternative to fill the healthcare service gap, reduce suffering of women accessing medical care and safe childbirth services, and support continuity of essential healthcare services.

The implementing partner reported significant challenges procuring and supplying required materials and equipment. After considerable effort, raw materials were transported from Chad to the project site. The 10 kW lithium battery was received, while the solar panels and inverter remained in transit and were expected to arrive during the following week. Installation was set to commence once all equipment was delivered, and documentation via photos and videos was planned for that phase. A more accurate estimate of direct beneficiaries was to be provided after the system became operational.

The provision of electricity to the operating room using a solar power system, including batteries, solar panels, and related equipment, remained the central activity of this emergency grant, however we also distributed hygiene kits to 50 women.

We remained deeply appreciative of GlobalGiving’s support and committed to sharing further updates, including visual documentation and beneficiary data, once the system is operational.

A few photos of the items are attached and those of the distributed kit items. Kits were distributed to 50 women.
