Our Students Learn How to Make Documentaries

By Sebastian Milla | Programs Officer

These last 3 months have been busy ones for our students! MyBlockNYC's short documentary program has kept them active by giving them digital cameras and tasking them to film their communities in action. Each student has chosen a specific topic under the banner of healthy relationships, and will interview people in their communities according to that topic. Students are asking: what makes healthy friendships, partnerships, marriages, and families?

By the end of November, our students will have finished their documentaries. After viewing them, the students will discuss the similarities and differences in between the answers they received for the different questions. They will also decide on which specific issues feel the most urgent. By identifying which themes need to be highlighted, our students will ensure that the drama at the end of this year-long project will be useful to their communities.

On behalf of the students and everyone working on the My School - My Community Program, I'd like to thank you for your continued support. Please spread the word and consider giving again for an arts-based initiative that is providing a platform for students to learn about social engagement and communication.
