Program Update

By Graciela Leal | Program Officer

The My School-My Community program is currently active in four public schools of New York City engaging students and teachers on changing knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of school community members related to different issues affecting their school communities. At this point in the year, students have been introduced to the particular PCI Media Impact’s My Community approach that uses Entertainment-Education to amplify student voices and engage others in actions that foster positive social changes.

As part of the program activities, students have produced short video trailers, engaged in qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis in order to determine the focus issue that will drive their change campaigns (e.g. student engagement) and have hosted presentations with key stakeholders about their target issue. Now, students are getting ready to start the production phase in which they will write Entertainment-Education scripts and storylines, film and edit, design and produce a radio call-in show to engage the audience and create campaigns (which include events and publicity materials) to further engage the community in the My School-My Community issue.

On November 2013 students and teachers attended a workshop at PCI Media Impact headquarters where they learned important skills in scriptwriting, filming and post-production, campaigning and management. Students were excited to learn that they were partnering with an organization that works to achieve some of the most important and pressing goals on the international development agenda. Students also enjoyed the hands-on workshops where they had the opportunity to learn techniques from PCI Media Impact’s staff

Check out some of the products that students have developed and stay tuned to learn how the program progresses throughout the year!
