Talent Development and Youth Activism

By Joseph Jawanghe | Project Leader

Project Summary

The Empowering Rural Youth in Uganda Through Sports project is using sports as a powerful tool to inspire positive behavior change, promote healthy living, and strengthen community engagement among rural youth. During this reporting period, the project successfully established and equipped two youth teams—a Netball Team and a Football Team—providing young people with safe, structured opportunities to develop their talents, leadership skills, and social responsibility. Through regular training sessions and community-based sporting activities, the project has created an inclusive platform where youth can learn teamwork, discipline, and resilience while staying physically active and connected to their communities.

Activities Implemented

Formation and organization of one Netball Team and one Football Team composed of rural youth Distribution of essential sports equipment and uniforms to both teams Conducted regular training sessions focused on: Talent development Teamwork and discipline Positive behavior change Community sports engagement activities to encourage participation and social cohesion

Key Results and Outcomes

Youth Talent Development: Young people are now actively developing their sporting skills, with several participants demonstrating strong potential in netball and football. Behavior Change and Life Skills: Participation in team sports has contributed to improved discipline, cooperation, time management, and self-confidence among the youth. Healthy Living: Regular physical activity has encouraged healthier lifestyles, helping reduce idleness and negative behaviors such as substance abuse. Community Engagement: Sports activities have brought community members together, strengthening relationships between youth, families, and local leaders.

Beneficiaries

Direct Beneficiaries: Rural youth participating in the Netball and Football teams, including both girls and boys. Indirect Beneficiaries: Families, peers, and community members who benefit from improved youth behavior, community unity, and positive role modeling.

Challenges

Limited access to additional training facilities and playfields Weather-related disruptions to training schedules High demand from other youth wishing to join the teams, exceeding current resources Despite these challenges, strong community support and youth enthusiasm have helped keep the project active and impactful.

Lessons Learned

Sports are a highly effective entry point for youth engagement and behavior change in rural settings. Providing structured activities reduces risky behavior and increases youth confidence and motivation. Community involvement is essential for sustainability and youth participation.

Next Steps

Expand the program to include more youth and additional teams Organize friendly matches and local tournaments to expose youth to competitive play Integrate life-skills training sessions on leadership, health, and personal development Seek additional partnerships and funding to strengthen and scale the initiative

Conclusion

The Empowering Rural Youth in Uganda Through Sports project is making meaningful progress toward nurturing healthy, skilled, and socially responsible young people. With continued support, the initiative will further empower rural youth, strengthen communities, and create long-term positive change through sports.
