A new milestone for our beneficiaries

Dear friend,

I am glad to report that our project has reached a new milestone. In our last report, we shared with you the support we received from our partners mainly the staff of Dentsu Aegis Media Network. I am also mentioned that we planned to scale up the project as a result.

Last month, we launched the third phase of this project by disbursing funds to 60 women. The women were helped to form groups, registered with the local depart of social services and account opened for them. They were also provided basic business skill training.

We are extremely happy to receive support for three groups from the local member of Parliament representing women in Mandera County. Hon. Fatiya's support came at the right time when we are expanding the project. We thank her for the support. She was impressed by the progress the targeted women are making and hence the support she extended.

Without God's grace and the support by our donors, we wouldn't have been able to leverage such as support from the local leaders. Thank you.

A very positive end to 2016- 4th Report

Dear esteemed supporters,

Let me start by wishing you special seasonal greetings and a happy new year in advance.

Without a doubt 2016 has been a very successful year for us and our beneficiaries. One special event took place in September 2016. A bike ride from Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris to London. This is the second event organised by our supporters from Dentsu Media Network a corporate partner to GlobalGiving. This year's bike ride raised £11,000 for our two projects; Empowering Resource Poor Women Through Micro-Loan and Bridge Educational Gaps for Orphan Girls.

We sincerely thank GlobalGiving UK for introducing us to this wonderful staff of Dentsu Media Network which organised and took part in the Bike Ride last year and this year. Thank you also for your generosity and support throughout 2016. Your initial donation played in the successes we have achieved for our beneficiaries. Because of the money raised through the Bike Ride event, are now able to increase the number of women we support by 25 and provide additional micro-loan for the existing women so that they can re-capitalise their businesses. The disbursement is scheduled to take place on December 24th, 2016 during which £4048 will be paid to the beneficiaries. We shall let you know the details in the next updates in February. 2017.

This what Habiba, a Bulla Wajir resident ( a camp for internally displaced families) and the group leader for the five women selected from this village had to say on hearing of the forthcoming disbursement.

'' Before the micro-loan was given to us we use to buy a bag of vegetables from the traders and sell them to our customers. Now most of our members have increased the number of vegetable bags they buy to two. With further support, I am sure we can expand our business. Thank you GENCAD''

In addition to increased volume of items they sell, the initial 30 women beneficiaries have accumulated savings equivalent to the loan they have repaid. The loan was provided on condition that the recipients save an equivalent amount to the loan repayment with us. This serves as an incentive to avoid loan defaults and engender savings culture amongst our beneficiaries. The amount they save with us will be handed back to them once the full loan repayment is made.

Third Progress Report

Abdia is a widow and a mother of two and half-year-old baby. She is a resident of Lafey village which is on the outskirt of Elwak Town. Abdia and other residents of Lafey village moved into the area as an internally displaced people due to clan conflicts. The economic activities of the resident of this village are livestock keeping. However, due to drought and conflicts , they had abandoned their full-time pastoralism and moved into Elwak Town. Some of the villages still keep few animals mainly for milk.

However, Abdia's husband didn't leave behind enough animal for his family. Abdia remained at home looking after her baby and was economically inactive. She didn't have business experience and capital to start a business. Luckily Abdia was selected by the local committee to benefit from this project. She received Ksh. 15,000. She was very keen to start and rented a small kiosk. Luckily a member of her extended family agreed to look after her baby while she is away to attend to her small shop. Although the money she was lent wasn't huge, she has shown the necessary determination to make it a success. She is up to date with her repayment and savings as agreed.

During a visit by GENCAD's Project Coordinator recently, Abdia couldn't hide her excitement. She told the project coordinator '' I can now think for myself and plan for my baby's future. Staying at home doing nothing was humiliating and makes you feel worthless''

This was made possible by your generous donations. Thank you. Although she understands the amount of the loan was small, she is keen to reinvesting any extra profits.

Just like Abdia, the rest of the 30 women on the project are equally working hard to grow their business and repay their loans. GENCAD is determined to support these women to grow and expand their business in the years ahead. With your support, we can achieve this and much more for the many women who are in desperate need for support. Thank you and may God bless you.
