Patio Taller is an innovative program for community empowerment and creativity, led by the grassroots organization Parceleras Afrocaribenas. Through art, environmental workshops, and nutritious meals, it offers children and youth the opportunity to foster creativity, build community, and promote education on cultural, environmental, and racial justice. The program serves local youth after the closure of the neighborhood's public school displaced hundreds of students.
The closure of the neighborhood's public school displaced hundreds of children, leaving them without a local space for learning and community-building. This reflects a larger crisis in Puerto Rico, where 673 public schools (44%) have closed since 2007, creating educational gaps. These closures limit opportunities for creative expression and education on cultural, environmental, and racial justice, highlighting the need for programs that empower marginalized youth.
This project will provide children and youth a safe, nurturing space for learning and creativity through art and environmental workshops. It addresses the educational gap caused by school closures while promoting cultural, environmental, and racial justice education. Through hands-on, community-centered activities, participants will build skills, confidence, and connections, empowering them to reclaim their agency and contribute to the well-being of their community.
The long-term impact of this project is to foster a generation of empowered, creative, and socially conscious youth who actively contribute to their community's resilience and growth. By addressing gaps left by the school closure, the program equips children and youth with tools to think critically, embrace their cultural heritage, and cultivate their imagination. Over time, they will strengthen community ties, inspire collective action, and lead systemic change toward a more equitable future.
