Why This Project Matters Now

Kakuma Refugee Camp is home to over 2,000 refugees living with disabilities, many of whom face severe exclusion from education, employment, and skills training. Recent humanitarian funding cuts, including reduced food assistance, have made life even more challenging. Without income-generating skills or mobility support, many refugees with disabilities remain fully dependent on shrinking aid.

This project responds directly to this urgent need by focusing on dignity, inclusion, and self-reliance.

What We Have Achieved So Far

Although the full implementation requires additional funding, the USD 800 raised has enabled us to begin early groundwork activities, including:

• Community consultations with refugees living with disabilities to better understand priority needs

• Identification and mapping of potential participants, with a focus on women, youth, and caregivers with disabilities

• Initial planning and coordination with local trainers and community leaders for tailoring, hairdressing, and digital skills training

• Strengthening accountability systems to ensure transparent and effective use of funds once implementation begins

These preparatory steps are critical to ensure the project is inclusive, well-structured, and impactful once scaled.

How Funds Will Be Used Next

As additional funds are raised, the next phase will focus on:

• Procuring assistive devices such as wheelchairs, crutches, and walking sticks

• Launching skills training in tailoring, hairdressing, and digital literacy for the first group of participants

• Providing mentorship and emotional support sessions to build confidence and resilience

• Ensuring training spaces are accessible and disability-friendly

Every dollar raised brings us closer to reaching our first cohort of participants.

Expected Impact

With full funding, this project will:

• Directly empower 40 refugees with disabilities with practical skills and tools for self-employment

• Positively impact over 100 people, including family members and caregivers

• Increase household income, food security, and dignity

• Challenge stigma by showcasing the abilities and potential of persons with disabilities
