Progress Report 3

By By Japan Heart | Project Leader

Overview

In June 2025, we launched a new one-year Medical Massage Therapist Training Course in Yangon, Myanmar, for ten visually impaired students aged from their 20s to 40s. The program provides both technical skills and personal development to help them achieve economic independence. Students live together at a school for the blind while receiving training in massage techniques, anatomy, physiology, and physical fitness. This initiative is part of Japan Heart’s ongoing mission to create sustainable livelihoods for people with disabilities in Myanmar.

Key Updates

  • New Class Started: Ten students joined this year’s program, representing diverse backgrounds- some born blind, others losing sight from illness or accidents.
  • Hands-On Practice: Students train in pairs, taking turns as therapist and patient, learning to identify muscles and bones through touch.
  • Instructor Leadership: Mr. A-Chan-Tu, himself visually impaired and a graduate of our first Instructor Training Course, is now part of our staff. He brings experience as both a teacher and a massage business owner in a remote area.
  • Building Stamina: Daily lessons include physical training such as sit-ups and push-ups to prepare students for the physical demands of massage work.
  • Team Spirit: Initially, some students struggled with homesickness and communal living. Through mutual encouragement, they have built strong bonds as a learning community.

Upcoming Goals

  • Continue Tailored Training:Provide individual guidance for each student until course completion in March 2026.
  • Skill Certification: Ensure all students graduate with solid massage skills and the confidence to start working independently.
  • Employment Support:Assist graduates in finding job placements or starting their own massage businesses.
  • Long-Term Impact: Strengthen the program to serve as a model for vocational training for people with disabilities in Myanmar.

Acknowledgement

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all donors and supporters who make this program possible. Your contributions are not only funding training materials, living expenses, and instructor salaries, but also giving each student the opportunity to gain dignity, independence, and hope for a brighter future.

Every massage technique they learn, every moment of teamwork they experience, and every bit of confidence they gain is thanks to your generosity. We look forward to sharing their continued progress with you in the coming months.
