Challenge

Indigenous peoples live in the riparian areas of the forests and their livelihoods depend mainly on forest resources, namely agriculture and hunting. Since armed clashes intensified in their living environments around Virunga National Park, indigenous peoples have been forced to abandon their natural environment to seek refuge in areas far from their sources of survival. Since then, their living conditions have deteriorated as they have no other solutions to survive.

Solution

The project targets 100 direct beneficiaries among the indigenous populations affected by the war in Mudja and Rusayo . These beneficiaries will be trained on bread making techniques for a period of 6 days. The training will cover practical knowledge in bread making, selling and financial education. Once the direct beneficiaries have been trained, the project will set up two bakeries which will be equipped with the materials necessary for manufacturing and will distribute a stock of inputs.

Long-Term Impact

The project will achieve a great impact on improving the living conditions of indigenous populations and reducing the risks of violence and marginalization. Their livelihoods will be improved as well as their food situation thanks to the project. Households will be able to easily access food and obtain additional means for other needs.
