A new year has finished and the girls had lots of reasons to celebrate their year’s achievements. That is why they decided to team up outside the field and cook empanadas – traditional Argentinian meal- to sell them and raise money to travel all together, and not only did all of our staff joined forces, but also the girls families as they joined us during the cooking day.

Camping for two days outside the city, facing new challenges all together, having fun and celebrating was the goal for the team. It surpassed expectations and despite the heavy rain, nothing could cloud the happiness of celebrating a year full of learnings and life long lasting friendships.

With lots of extra activities, programing, deep conversations and a great team of friends a new year has finished, it is time to make a balance and plan for a fresh start to empower a new  team out of poverty during 2019. We count on you to help us make it a reality.

On a general note, we celebrated the end of the year with all our programs participants and their families in a carnival-like activity in the community park with lots of games. It was a day packed with fun where we could see the results of everything we worked for during the year.

It may sound crazy that we don’t want girls to compete when we are referring to sports. However, hockey is just as a game, it is an opportunity to develop long lasting bonds between the team mates.

During the time spent at the field, girls get to know each other, but sometimes they forget that they are the same team, and compete with each other, this is why, as soon as we noticed this was happening between two girls, the coach changed strategy and forced them to collaborate with each other and to be on the “same team” during all exercises while training. It only took a while for them to understand that they were better together.

To re-enforce this concept, they also had a cooking day to prepare their own pizzas from scratch as a team and shared it later, and had the visit from a more experienced team to share their story.

Of course this lessons are a work in progress, but this girls sure are taking every advantage to be more empowered and lift each other up.

After some weeks of hard training, the effort is starting to pay off, girls feel better and more confident in their skills and with her abilities. They trust each other to have their backs as true team mates do.

As a team they had their first test playing against another team on a match, where the important thing was not who won, but how did they face the situation, and it was a true success- they never lost faith in their team mates and they continued to suppport each other at all times. After the game, all teams shared a common meal where they got to know each other, share their experiences, and even some advice on some hockey techniques.

2018 officially started with a new group of girls that happily signed up for our field hockey programs. Girls aged from 12 to 18 years old began with trainings last week, after a signing in process that inlcudes their commitment (and their families) to the programs.

As usual, all the participants are provided with all the equipment needed to do proper trainings: field hockey sticks, balls, shin guard protection, etc.

Girls are making sure that their new team mates feel comfortable and motivated, explanining hockey techniques, being proactive in initiating conversations and smiling a lot.

Coming month, competitions are starting, with weekly games on weekends.

Another year came to an end and as usual we needed to celebrate all the acomplishments. We had a big party involving all of our programs participants, their families and our staff.

During the celebration, every program had their moment where they received a diploma and showed off what they had been doing during the year. When it came to our girl athletes, they read some words about what they learnt during the year that will last for a lifetime.

The rest of our programs also had their moment during the day to show the results of the year and to have fun playing outside, feeling safe and owning their future!

The next couple of months will mean planing time for our staff as we prepare for an exiciting new year, full of new challenges and with many surprises to come. Stay tunned!
