Awareness & Engagement Session in Kasur

Good Thinkers Organization – Pakistan conducted two awareness sessions in Kasur, Punjab, aimed at sensitizing 44 adolescent girls and 30 of their parents about the importance of continuing education and delaying early marriage. The goal was to instill confidence in girls and mobilize parental support so that fewer girls drop out in primary or elementary school.

These sessions are part of GTO’s ongoing initiative under the Empowering Girls Through Education in Pakistan project to strengthen girls’ educational resilience, delay child marriage, and foster social and economic sustainability.

Activities & Highlights

  • The sessions took place in a modest classroom setting, with banners and materials indicating the GlobalGiving partnership (as seen in the attached photo).

  • Girls sat in small groups while facilitators engaged them via discussion, short lectures, and collective reflection.

  • One powerful moment: a girl shared that she had been told by her relatives she “must quit school and help at home” — hearing the facilitator counter with examples of educated women earning incomes visibly moved many.

  • Parents asked candid questions: “How will education help if there are no jobs locally?” “What about household duties?” Facilitators responded by highlighting flexible pathways (vocational courses, small business skills) and shifting mindsets.

  • At the end, girls and parents filled out short feedback forms, expressing hopes, challenges, and pledges (e.g. “I will support my daughter to complete secondary education”)

Participants & Reach

  • Girls: 44 adolescent girls from local neighborhoods

  • Parents: 30 parents (mostly mothers, some fathers)

  • Locations: Kasur district

  • Demographics: Many girls had already dropped out or were on the verge; many parents had limited formal education

Outcomes & Observed Changes

While full impact (e.g. school retention) will take time to measure, these near-term outcomes were observed:

  1. Increased Awareness & Motivation

    • Nearly all girls expressed renewed motivation to continue schooling (vs. prior resignation).

    • Parents acknowledged that early marriage is sometimes more harmful than expected — several pledged to delay marriage decisions.

  2. Commitments / Pledges

    • 20+ parents publicly pledged to support their daughters’ education for at least two more years.

    • Girls wrote down personal goals (e.g. “finish grade 8,” “learn a trade”) on sticky cards.

  3. Trust & Engagement

    • The open discussion allowed participants to voice real fears (transport, safety, finances).

    • A few parents requested follow-up home visits, signaling deeper interest rather than passive attendance.

  4. Challenges surfaced

    • Some parents worry about cost of schooling (uniforms, supplies, transport).

    • Some belief remains: “girls’ education is secondary to household role.”

    • In a few households, resistance from in-laws or extended family is a barrier beyond the immediate parent.

Appreciation & Call to Partners

We deeply appreciate every donor, supporter, and local volunteer whose generosity makes this work possible. Because of you:

  • We reached 74 people (girls + parents) in this first round in Kasur

  • We planted seeds of awareness, hope, and commitment

  • We collected valuable feedback to sharpen our next steps

We look forward to continuing this journey, scaling up, and ensuring that more girls in under-resourced areas can stay in school, build futures, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

If you’re reading this and are moved, you can help by:

  • Spreading awareness of this project

  • Supporting local literacy / kit funding

  • Participating in mentorship or outreach

Thank you for believing in the power of education and for walking this path with us.
