Providing girls with a safe space in which to express themselves is crucial to helping them escape poverty and leverage economic opportunities across informal settlements like #Kibera. Our Girls' Empowerment program does just that and reached over 3,000 girls last year.

Across the world, adolescent girls are marginalized and more vulnerable than boys. In addition to struggling with extreme poverty on a daily basis, girls living in Kibera often face tragedies like early marriage, sexual violence, and female genital mutilation. What is more alarming is that less than 1% of girls in Kibera have access to a girls-only space or program.

Giving girls a safe space, both physical and emotional, in which to express themselves is crucial to helping them escape poverty and leverage economic opportunities. Our Binti Pamoja Core Program serves more than 3,000 girls ages 9-20 annually, and helps girls discover their personal leadership and build confidence. Using arts activities like photography, drama and dance, the program mentors and empowers girls with sexual and reproductive health educatoin, and other critical training and life skills.

Our Binti Pamoja program provides girls in Kibera a safe space, both physical and emotional, in which to express themselves. Empowerment, safety, and community networking is crucial to helping girls leverage opportunities and ultimately escape poverty.

After participating in Binti Pamoja as a child, Catherine is now a Safe Space mentor with the program. Catherine is passionate about girls' empowerment because she has personally experienced the benefits of mentorship during her own adolescent growth and development.

Catherine specialized in programming related to child privacy, child protection, and self-defense. As the liaison to four schools, she has worked directly with 150 girls in the local community. She recently completed vocational training with the support of our Angaza scholarship program, and now hopes to run her own salon within the Kiberan community.

When asked why she decided to open her business in Kibera, she replied, "It's a mark of what Binti Pamoja can transform young girls into."

By investing in the adolescent girl, YOU are helping to secure a positive future for Catherine, for girls and young women in Kibera, and beyond. Help ensure this progress continues! Sign up for a monthly recurring donation today. Tuendelee Pamoja. Progress Together.

Thank you from all of us at Carolina for Kibera.

Dear Carolina for Kibera family, friends, and supporters,

Girls are succeeding in Kibera because of YOU! This past year, we reached 1,355 girls through our school programs and an additional 780 girls throughout our Safe Spaces gatherings in the community!

Young women in Kibera are more likely to face some of the world’s most urgent challenges – early marriage, lack of education, sexual violence, FGM – that can often prevent them from fulfilling their potential. Your contribution to the Binti Pamoja Core Program is an investment in the next generation of female leaders. YOU are ensuring young women in Kibera continue to have access to role models and safe spaces for receiving support, building confidence, and developing as young leaders in the community like Sumaiya.

As a Binti Pamoja Safe Space leader and mentor, Sumaiya relishes the opportunity to set a positive example. “Binti is my foundation for lots of things – acting, journalism, social advocacy,” she shared. Sumaiya is a firm believer in the idea that providing spaces for girls to tell their stories and learn about their rights empowers them to pursue their dreams and helps keep them safe. She explains, “Sexual and reproductive health is not talked about normally. No one is that keen to explain anything.” Through her leadership, Sumaiya is helping to both educate and usher in a new generation of empowered girls in Kibera.
