By Siti Nurhalisa | Vice President of Student Council
My name is Nurhalisa or Ica and I’m sixteen years old. I live with my family who live a very simple life. My father is an online motorbike taxi driver and my mother is a house wife. I have two younger siblings.
I get to know about Yayasan Cipta Mandiri from my aunt, whom formerly a student of sewing class at YCM. Sadly I cannot continue my education to senior high school after I finished my junior high school as I was failed the entrance test to study in public vocational school and my father could not afford to allow me to study in a private school. That’s why I decided to come and learn at YCM in order to gain skill and knowledge.
At Yayasan Cipta Mandiri, I meet with many great young people. I’m impressed as my “senior” friends are able to communicate fluently in English with our foreign volunteers and able to do things that I didn’t imagine before, like they are able to work on computer (IT and graphic design), making film and photography and other things. I join sewing in the handicraft class now. I learn how to make pattern, sewing, and photo editing as well as selling our products through online shop. I also learn Basic English, computer and sport every Saturday with Kak Ono.
I also join and active in YCM’s Student Council (SC) organization. I learn about how to work on an organization. When there was a chance of an election to become the president and vice president of SC, Kak Fikri and I were nominated and elected to become the new President and Vice President of YCM’s Student Council.
I have a dream to become a successful business woman someday and to have my own clothing store with my own design and brand. I hope I can get my high school diploma by taking a package school (Paket C) and continue my study in an institute of fashion design.
I’m happy to learn and to be a part of YCM’s family. This place giving me a chance to develop myself and obtain the experience that will be very useful for my life in the future and probably I won’t be able to get it from formal school. Thank you so much YCM, all the sponsors and GlobalGiving!
