The Deaf community is a vulnerable population, since language deprivation impedes their access to information and knowledge. When it comes to Deaf Women, this situation deepens and results in dependence, poor self-esteem and health risk. We will bring information to deaf women through a series of videos in sign language to encourage their own empowerment through the reinforcement of their bonds, access to information and linguistic and cultural recognition.
Lack of communication in the deaf community places Deaf women in a vulnerable position. Illiteracy, adolescent pregnancies, increased exposure to gender-based violence and sexually transmitted infections are added to the fact that they are left aside when deciding on vital health issues. It is important that their "voice" is heard, that deaf women can propose and agree on the topics that concern their health and their decisions, in order to build up their own tools of empowerment.
We propose to create an Internet page with videos in Argentine sign language in which deaf women can find answers to their questions about their rights, gender issues, care of their sexual health, family planning and care of their children. The videos will also have subtitles and voiceovers, so that hearing women can use them as well. The content will be available to be download in DVD format.
Access to information will contribute to the reduction of the high rate of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies. Deaf Women will be aware of their rights, will have the opportunity to decide for themselves about their health, their sexuality, their children, which will lead to an improvement in self-esteem and in their self perception. The use of Technology ensures that these videos will endure over time.
