The citizens of The Bahamas need your support to make an impact in their communities! Every Bahamian needs to be aware of their role in nation-building. ORG's 'Active Citizens Bahamas' outreach campaign travels across the islands to teach citizens how their civic action and voices can build the inclusion, consensus, and responsiveness needed in local & central government and civil society to improve their livelihoods.
In The Bahamas, civic participation is low due to knowledge gap around governance among the citizens. In addition, there are too few opportunities for citizens to engage in decision making processes. This has prevented important citizen input from being factored into matters related to national development and sustainable growth. Greater citizen in is paramount as the country seeks to solve existing challenges and build resilience in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through Active Citizens Bahamas, ORG will host empowerment sessions to teach Bahamians about the power of civic engagement and collective action at the community level. Through focus groups & surveys, we will also collect valuable citizen feedback around what barriers exist to citizens participating across the archipelago and what solutions are needed to bridge the gaps.
Active Citizens Bahamas will build a landscape where civic education can become more common knowledge in communities. Through work with organized institutions, schools and community organizations, ORG will empower groups to embed civic education into their activities and create a long-term landscape for increased citizen participation and empowerment.
