The project will support 200 adolescent mothers in senior high school in poor and high HIV burden communities in Zambia with tuition fees, link them to HIV prevention services, and social protection programs
In Zambia the HIV incidence rate is highest among female adolescents. Adolescent girls from poor households are usually forced to engage in high-risk sexual behaviors to supplement their household income. This puts them at elevated risk of HIV acquisition, teen pregnancy, and school dropout. The project will target these adolescent mothers and will support them through high school completion and will link them to combination HIV prevention and social protection programs
Community Case Workers and teachers in the PCZ-supported Community Case Management Program will use existing vulnerability assessment tools to identify pregnant adolescents in targeted communities. After enrollment, individualized case plans will be used to address school dropout, HIV risks, and socioeconomic needs. Donor funds will cover tuition and school textbooks to help adolescents remain in school and reduce vulnerability.
200 adolescent girls at high risk of HIV disease and teen pregnancy will receive high school education and will graduate with high school certificates. As a result, they will be able to get higher education and livelihood skills, rise out of poverty, and will be HIV free.
