Kano's education system faces a critical shortage of trained teachers. According to UNESCO, 70% of teachers in Sub-Saharan Africa lack formal professional training, and the World Bank reports that 9 out of 10 children cannot read a simple sentence by age 10. In Kano, overcrowded classrooms, outdated teaching methods, and limited digital skills leave students with some of the lowest literacy and numeracy outcomes. Teachers urgently need modern, high-quality training to close this learning gap.
This project will address the problem by building and equipping a permanent teacher training facility that provides continuous, high-quality professional development. Through three monthly training cycles, the centre will train 2,520 teachers each year in modern teaching methods, digital skills, and effective classroom practices. Strengthening teacher capacity will directly improve classroom quality and raise literacy and numeracy outcomes for students across Kano.
By building a permanent teacher training centre, this project creates a lasting educational asset that will serve Kano for generations. If the centre continues operating for 10 years, it will train over 25,000 teachers and improve learning for more than 3.7 million students. As teachers apply modern methods, literacy and numeracy rates will rise and learning gaps will shrink, creating long-term transformation across the education system.
