During this cycle with the kids and adolescents participating in the EmpowerED: Sexual and Reproductive Health for Teens project, we conducted a workshop focused on strengthening personal values and principles. We believe that before addressing sexual and reproductive health topics directly, it is essential for participants to recognize their self-worth, understand their rights, and develop tools for making conscious and responsible decisions.
In this session, we worked with educational booklets on values, using participatory activities that allowed the teens to reflect on dignity, self-care, respect, self-esteem, and personal boundaries. Our main goal was to provide a solid foundation for them to understand that:
They are valuable individuals worthy of respect.
No one has the right to their bodies.
It is important to live each stage—childhood and adolescence—fully and without pressure or situations that may compromise their well-being.
Strengthening their inner values is essential to prevent decisions influenced by misinformation, manipulation, or low self-esteem.
This initial approach helps us lay the emotional and educational groundwork needed to later address more central topics related to sexual and reproductive health. We firmly believe that teaching values and supporting the development of personal identity are critical components for empowering adolescents and promoting healthy relationships, informed decision-making, and holistic growth.
The workshop was well received; participants engaged actively, shared their reflections, and showed openness to continue exploring the program’s content. This session represents a significant step in the project’s educational process, preparing the path to continue strengthening their knowledge, capacities, and autonomy.
