Introduction

Globalteer, a UK-registered charity, has been dedicated to supporting vulnerable communities through sustainable initiatives since 2006. Recognizing the critical need to safeguard children beyond the confines of their projects, Globalteer launched the Child Protection Project in 2019. This initiative focuses on educating children about personal safety, aiming to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect themselves from harm.

Implementation in Peru and Cambodia

The Child Protection Project has been integrated into Globalteer's educational programs at Picaflor House in Peru and Helping Hands in Cambodia. These centers provide holistic education to children from underserved communities, and the addition of child safety modules enhances their commitment to student well-being.

Child Safety Modules

The curriculum comprises ten comprehensive modules designed to address various aspects of child safety:

Confidence Building: Encouraging self-assurance to reduce vulnerability.

Recognizing Feelings: Helping children identify and trust their emotions.

Identifying Trusted Adults: Guiding children to know whom they can approach for help.

Understanding Safe and Unsafe Touches: Educating about personal boundaries.

Distinguishing Secrets and Surprises: Teaching which information should not be kept secret.

Stranger Danger Awareness: Providing strategies for safe interactions with strangers.

Road Safety: Instructing on navigating traffic and pedestrian rules.

Online Safety: Highlighting the importance of cautious internet use.

Home Hazard Identification: Raising awareness of potential dangers within the home.

Developing Safety Strategies: Equipping children with plans to avoid or respond to unsafe situations.

Impact and Outcomes

The implementation of these modules has led to significant positive outcomes:
Enhanced Confidence: Children exhibit increased self-esteem, making them less susceptible to abuse.
Improved Communication: Students are more willing to discuss concerns with trusted adults.
Community Engagement: Parents and teachers are more involved in promoting child safety.
Skill Development: Children acquire practical skills to navigate daily challenges safely.

Educating Teachers and Families

A crucial component of the project involves training educators and engaging families:

Teacher Workshops: Educators receive training to effectively deliver sensitive topics, ensuring age-appropriate and culturally relevant instruction.

Family Outreach: Social workers, like Kong at Helping Hands, conduct home visits to educate parents on child abuse and safety, fostering improved family relationships and parenting practices.

Sessions

Globalteer's Child Protection Classes in Peru and Cambodia exemplify a proactive approach to child safety education. By empowering children with knowledge and engaging the broader community, these initiatives contribute to creating safer environments where children can thrive. The program's success underscores the importance of comprehensive safety education as a fundamental component of child development.
