This project aims to empower refugees and asylum seekers in Kampala with literacy and life skills in order to become self-reliant. The project intends to equip this vulnerable group with basic functional adult literacy skills. As the target group is from countries where English is not the official language, these people find it hard to communicate, interact and integrate within the Ugandan host community. Furthermore it aims to empower refugees through sports and offering seminars and discussion
There are estimated 50,000 refugees in Kampala, Uganda, who are outside the mainstream UNHCR (The UN Refugee Agency) and Ugandan Government assistance programmes. Majority of the refugees are young. Refugees are required to sustain themselves, but the majority of them have literacy and language problems thus cutting them off from the competitive market structures in the city. Some of them are forced into harmful coping strategies such as crime and prostitution.
This project aims to empower refugees and asylum seekers in Kampala with literacy, life skills and livelihoods strategies in order to become self reliant. The project intends to equip this vulnerable group with basic functional adult literacy skills so that they can manage to read and write. We offer literacy education that promotes self-reliance, self-esteem, addresses the daily needs of the refugees, and promotes community involvement.
The target group of this project are young refugees between the ages of 16 - 35 years old. The estimated direct beneficiaries of this project are 690. The indirect beneficiaries are estimated at about 1,500. The gender balance is estimated to be 55% female and 45% male. Machines, tools, equipments and other resources purchased for the project will be retained and maintained so that they will still be of use to future beneficiaries.
