Axis is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that bridges the gap between people of color and independent schools. We guide cohorts of students of color and their families through the independent school admissions process and stay with them throughout their school journey. We serve as advocates and partners that help families navigate their education. To achieve this level of personalized support in service of educational equity, Axis streamlines the process at no cost to families.
People of color are underrepresented in independent schools. 57% of California residents are Latinx/Hispanic or Black, yet they make up only 10.9% of California private school students (CAIS). Only 10% of independent school faculty are educators of color (Education Week). Many families of color lack access to resources available to white students, such as costly educational consultants and tutoring services, and are unfamiliar with the intricate, multi-step independent school admissions process.
Axis champions students and their families throughout the admissions process, helping to level the playing field and ensure equitable educational opportunities in L.A. However, our organization's work doesn't stop at admissions - students of color need support once enrolled and schools must be held accountable for creating safe, inclusive learning environments.
By ensuring that independent school populations reflect racial and socioeconomic diversity, Axis is unique in its aim of transforming entire educational ecosystems and making them healthier for both BIPOC individuals and their peers. We seek to build power and create upward mobility for families of color by removing the barriers to high-quality education which in turn will lead to liberation.
