Iganga: Creating Opportunities for Education and Empowerment

By Rachel Hartgen | S.O.U.L. Foundation Executive Director

Land donated by the Community!
Land donated by the Community!

With your generosity, S.O.U.L. has demarcated and cleared the land in partnership with the community for the Center and will break ground on construction soon!

Due to a huge demand, we started working with community members in Iganga two years ago and have since established a women’s goat cooperative and installed a 7-stance latrine at a local primary school for 950+ students that previously had no bathroom at all. We also accepted 10 students from the rural area into our student sponsorship program.

With the establishment of the Iganga Educational Center, imagine how many more people we can serve! The Center will provide a place for educational opportunities, both inside and outside of the classroom, for children, youth, and adults.

Across all programs, we expect 150 community members to use the new center daily, including families like Sylivia’s. Sylivia (pictured) is one of the first students accepted from Iganga into the S.O.U.L. Sponsorship Program. She is one of eleven children at home, a house of six girls and five boys. Her father was lost to cancer, and her mother struggles to get school fees and money to support her children. Her favorite subject is social studies and she aspires to be a doctor when she’s older because she wants to save lives. Through the new sponsorship program in Iganga, she is receiving access to education that otherwise would be impossible for her family to afford.

The new Center in Iganga will allow us to accept more students, like Sylivia, into our programs and will provide educational and empowerment programs to her family and hundreds of others in Iganga.
