By Bill Brower | GlobalGiving Field Program Officer
Bill Brower is a Field Program Officer with GlobalGiving who is visiting our partners’ projects throughout South and Southeast Asia. On March 14th he was a speaker at a workshop put on by LIN in Ho Chi Minh City. His “Postcard” following up on the event:
LIN was the first of a few organizations I came across in Southeast Asia that are set up to be a resource for other NGOs—a type of organization I didn’t know existed in developing countries before this trip. According to Dana Doan, LIN’s founder, they seek to support the work of local Vietnamese non-profits by connecting them with skilled volunteers, providing small grants and other resources, and holding workshops and trainings. I got to experience this last component firsthand as a speaker at a workshop LIN organized on the use of social media for non-profits.
I put on workshops myself in several other places in Southeast Asia and none were as well attended or professionally run as this. Sixty-five individuals representing 54 organizations came and saw a panel from local and international NGOs present their experience with using social media in Vietnam—a very valuable topic for non-profits (though I’m admittedly a bit biased). The attendees seemed engaged throughout and asked good questions.
LIN is a young organization but is already proving valuable to Saigon’s non-profits. I’m happy that they’ve recently secured a permanent spot on GlobalGiving!
