Summary

This project will support the Slum Film Festivals year-round activities, including workshops, master classes, community film screenings, themed special screenings, and our annual festival event. By providing platforms and resources for authentic storytelling, we aim to empower marginalised communities in Nairobi and other urban areas. Funds will cover program costs, equipment, and training to nurture local talent and foster community engagement in storytelling and filmmaking.

Challenge

Communities in Nairobi's informal settlements face significant barriers to storytelling and creative expression. Over 60% of the population lives in these marginalised areas with limited access to educational resources, creative platforms, or economic opportunities in the arts. The pandemic severely impacted our festival's operations, and without stable funding, we struggle to maintain our programs. The community's need for platforms to share their stories has never been more critical.

Solution

This project will provide essential funding to sustain our core activities. We will run workshops, master classes, & community screenings that directly engage over 1,000 participants annually. By offering practical skills in filmmaking, storytelling, & digital media, we empower local creators to share their narratives, address social issues, & build careers in the film industry. Our annual festival event will showcase these stories, bringing them to community members, policy makers, & global.

Long-Term Impact

By creating continuous opportunities for marginalised voices to engage in storytelling, this project will foster a culture of creativity & resilience. We aim to train over 100 emerging filmmakers each year, contributing to a vibrant community of storytellers who can influence social change & economic growth. The skills gained through our programs will help participants gain confidence, pursue careers, & use their stories to challenge stereotypes, preserve culture, & inspire action.
