In recent months we have developed different activities to strengthen the capacities of the environmental leaders of the Osa Peninsula. New groups of fishermen have joined our efforts to preserve the mangroves on the peninsula.
To give added value to our training process, we have the support of a group of psychology students at Baylor University, United States.
They visited various places in the community as
- Vanegas Elementary School where conducted activities and presentations for the school according their interests.
- Drake Bay High School. Here they interacted with the children and teached them more about the american education system. Also they did a mini workshop on similarities and differences between the US and Costa Rica.
- El Campo School. This is the closest school to CEEC- AWT Station (our station), and has just one teacher for all the grades, they are a small school but they are committed to protect the environment. Here the Baylor's students made a presentation about United States and the local children did the same about Costa Rica.
- Rincon School. The group had the time to give a mini workshop on similarities and differences between the US and Costa Rica.
- Alto Laguna’s Indigenous Community. In this activity the group visited the Alto Laguna’s Indigenous Community, where they shared with a family that showed them in a deep way the Ngöbe’s Indigenous Culture, through diverse cultural activities like indigenous’s natural medicine, their own traditional’s agricultural activities, general culture and history about this interesting ethnic group. Also the students shared different topics about USA and is culture.
- Community Blue Carbon Program. The group participated in the Community Blue Carbon Program where the students had the opportunity to collaborate in the nurseries and reforestation process. Also the students took different samples in the mouth of the main rivers in the area in order to measure parameters as turbidity, ph, nitrogen and phosphorus. This information will be used to measure the health of the mangroves where Fundación Neotropica developed in alliance with local fisherman association its mangrove conservation initiative.
