Makindu Girl with Mask
Schools are back open in Makindu and the community has been educated on how to stay safe from Covid-19. We are in need of basic supplies for the school due to the extra precautions needed. Our goal to Empower Girls with Education is stronger than ever as Covid-19 has caused major barriers in providing the girls of Makindu with the necessities to attend school safely in the last year. Covid-19 has intensified the struggles in the community, especially with health safety in schools. However, due to the schools needing to take precautions, people unable to work and the community struggling financially, the school was unable to get any funding for soap, water, food or any intervention. While we are trying to get funding for necessities for the school to be a Covid-safe space. As soon as we are able to provide the schools with the basic needs, we are also hoping to keep everyone in good shape and well nourished by providing goats to each family. One goat is $65. Providing each family with a goat will contribute to guaranteeing that the girls will be in good health to continue their education which will enhance their lives tremendously. We are so happy and fortunate to have been able to contain the spread of Covid-19 for this long, but now we are hoping to provide schools with the supplies to operate safely so we can continue to empower the girls of Makindu. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Girl carrying supplies
There have been many changes over the year for the students in Makindu. Right now they’re facing major challenges. All the kids have been educated on how to stay safe from Covid-19 and the schools are back open. However, due to the schools needing to take precautions, people unable to work and the community struggling financially, the school was unable to get any funding for soap, water, food or any intervention. This means that going back to school isn’t that safe for the girls, and we are wanting to help provide the school with funds for essential items like soap, water, food and masks. We are also hoping to keep everyone in good shape and well nourished which is why our other focus is to provide goats to each family. If we can get goats to each family, we can guarantee that the kids will be in good health to continue their education and continue going to school. We are so happy and fortunate to have been able to help slow the spread of Covid-19 for this long. We are hoping that we can continue that along with opening schools. Thank you for your ongoing support.

A Crucial Time For Hope
By Samira Lobby | Project Assistant
All around the world children are using technology to return to school and stay social. In Makindu, Kenya that is not the case. Most homes do not have electricity so the internet is absolutely not an option for any of the Makindu girls. The quarantine is forcing many children, especially girls, to be in close quarters with people they love and the hard truth, people who may be causing them pain or trauma. This entire situation is traumatizing and to get through it we must continue to support the girls and their families with valuable nutrients. It is now costing twice as much to feed the same amount of people because we are unable to have the center open. We can't wait to open up again, but we are so worried that once we do, so many girls will have lost hope due to the harshness of their current realities. This is a very scary time for people in Makindu. Their chances of death are naturally higher than those around the world due to the intense climate, malnutrition, and high risk of disease. Having hope during such an intense time is crucial to keep them alive. We thank you for believing in the importance of the success of girls in Makindu. Asante.
