In Madesh Pradesh in Southern Nepal 1 in 2 girls get married when they are still children. 1 in 3 girls experience domestic violence. To address these and other issues we opened the only safe house for underage girls in the region. The Janakpur centre provides shelter, education, care, counselling, legal support when needed and skills training to the girls to equip them for a successful future.
Janakpur, the location of the project, is the capital of Province 2, the smallest but most populous province in Nepal. There are more than 10,000 cases a year of violence against girls and women, the highest number of missing children in Nepal, approximately 400 children living on the streets, and 50% of children out of school.Due to political and other issues, there are very few organisations working in the area and none doing the same work as us.
Our Sansar together with our partner on this project, Pipal Tree, are solving the problem by opening a safe house for girls who have been victims of rape, trafficking and violence. The shelter provides care, education, skills training, counselling, legal support when needed and linking with the families where safe and possible. We also run community outreach programme and training communities on issues surrounding child marriage, child labour and domestic violence.
We envision Janakpur where girls are free to marry when they grow up, when they choose it without being forced. We work tirelessly to end domestic violence and to give the girls all the necessary tools for them to have happy, independent futures. We aim to assist all girls that have been victims or rape, violence, trafficking at the shelter and in the community.
