COVID-19 is a crisis that has affected everyone, especially children, and has widened even more the global inequality gap. The pandemic has suddenly transformed the childrens’ education from face-to-face classes to online learning via digital platforms and homeschooling. Thousands have been left without access to quality education.
One year after the pandemic started, the majority of private and public schools in Guatemala still did not open their doors. It is expected that remote teaching will be implemented at least until the second semester of the year. Many scholars without reliable internet access and technological tools, especially in rural areas, struggle to participate during online classes. Others have expressed experiencing stress under the new education situation and the lack of digital skills and abilities.
Against this background, CasaSito offered an online workshop to its Junior High and High School scholars in March 2021, that focused on digital resources and the correct use of digital tools and technology. The students learned how to clear space on their devices, the adequate use of their memory cards, the use of Drive, Google Meet, and the design platforms Canva and Genially that focus on designing and sharing media creations and presentations, among others.
In addition, CasaSito provided SIM cards to all students in order to provide internet access and be able to attend online lessons and continue with school and enrichment classes offered by CasaSito. This in turn will bridge the digital gap, help them to overcome limitations and allow them to improve their skills and chances for employment in the future.
