This season, we aim to empower 35,000 girls through our national football league, providing education and support that change behaviors and prevent child marriages, teenage pregnancies, and violence. "My best player got pregnant when she was 13 years old, so now we don't score as many goals, we don't win as many games", a football coach said at a dirt pitch in Zixaxa, outside of Mozambique's capital Maputo. Obviously, that is a problem for a football coach - we want to win our games. However, what he and other coaches really described were structural challenges and barriers for girls' development - but described with the passion of a football coach that wants to win their next game.
Futebol da forca engages, trains and supports voluntary football coaches to empower girls within football, while changing attitudes and norms that today prevent girls from reaching their full potential, in order for girls to thrive far outside the football field. Futebol da forca has always been built on the needs and challenges defined by our coaches, and on together with them responding to these issues - with evidence in one hand and entrepreneurship and will-power in the other.
We want to build long-lasting systemic impact by engaging local leaders and role models as football coaches equipping them with leadership, evidence and tools to empower girls, both on and off the football field, and ensuring that they have the support needed to maximise their impact in developing girls' agency and leading change in their local communities.
