We believe every girl needs to be empowered for the betterment of their future. An empowered and educated girl child is not only able to curve out a great future for themselves, but also creates a great impact in contributing to the betterment of their community. The ‘Empowering Girls Through Leadership’ project was born with a vision to mentor and support young girls from vulnerable backgrounds, who usually ended up as teen moms and school drop outs, to be leaders and mentors of tomorrow. Late last year we encountered a case that is at the core of this project. A heavily pregnant 10-year-old girl. The abuser is unknown. We took her in to oversee her safe delivery and she is currently being taught how to be a child mom. This incidence has stolen the little girl’s childhood as she is forced to be a mother while still a child. The community around her hold’s stigma for such pregnancies. We plan to support her and connect her to well-wishers who can fund her education once she is ready to resume school. We have been additionally visiting various primary schools in partnership with the Rotary Club of Karen to mentor young girls and boys alike. During the visits, we continue to always distribute sanitary towels to the girls to caution them during their menses. On World Literacy Day, together with well-wishers we went an extra mile to collect and distribute books with the vision of transforming literacy in learning spaces.
