This project uplifts marginalized youth in Southeastern Nigeria through its transformative Empower and Employ program. By combining personal growth, career development, and mindset training, we equip young people with digital skills and tools that open doors to sustainable livelihoods, including wage jobs, gig opportunities, and entrepreneurship. Our program connects members with one-on-one mentors, fostering civic engagement, leadership, that contribute to a holistic breakout from poverty.
In Southeastern Nigeria, youth face challenges from economic marginalization and insecurity, worsened by a violent sit-at-home movement due to Biafra cessation agitations and government prejudice. This has led to a 58% youth unemployment rate in the region, significantly higher than the national average of 33.3%, and a 40% drop in school attendance. Local businesses reported a 60% revenue decline, creating a cycle of poverty for people and youth in the area.
The Empower and Employ program equips young adults with essential skills for problem-solving, community leadership, and digital employment readiness. Through structured modules like purpose discovery, mentorship, CV writing, mock interviews, and mindset development, participants gain the confidence and tools needed to pursue sustainable careers. The program in relation with partner organizations in the US offers a paid 6-month internship for students to actualize what they learn.
By bridging gaps in skillsets and mindset, this program will create a lasting impact in Southeastern Nigeria. Graduates like Favour and Daniel testify to the program's life-changing effects, citing career clarity, improved interviewing skills and increase in interview requests. We are set to empower a new generation of leaders who will drive positive change in their communities, create a ripple effect of mentorship and remit to their local economy.
