FoodCycle Update

Every week our Hubs have been serving healthy three-course meals to their service users: people at risk from food poverty and social isolation including older people, homeless people, low-income families, and mental health service users.
Here's what Virginia, a regular visitor to FoodCycle in Cambridge had to say: “I heard about FoodCycle and came with my late husband. Since he has died I don't like to cook just for myself, so this is perfect and I am grateful... no matter who you are you are always made to feel welcome.” - Virginia Cole, 87-year old beneficiary at FoodCycle Cambridge.
Here's what else has been going on at FoodCycle:
  • In October we hosted our Annual FoodCycle Conference, where our Hub Leaders from across the country come together for a weekend of training, support, inspiration, and sharing their learnings. Without these people nothing would be possible!
  • We've been nominated for DSC Social Change Awards in the category of Everyday Impact - please vote for us by clicking on http://www.socialchangeawards.org.uk/vote.html?dm_i=6S7%2C10CIT%2C5MQE76%2C32LZE%2C1
  • At the start of October we were featured in the Guardian's 'In Praise Of...' section - a fantastic testament to our volunteers! You can read all about it at http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/oct/02/in-praise-of-foodcycle-editorial
  • We’ve also been involved in the past few months with attempts to ensure that usable surplus food is donated to charities rather than sent to landfill or used in anaerobic digestion. This included a meeting in July with DEFRA and representatives of all major UK supermarkets who met with FoodCycle for the first time. Talks were positive and we’re optimistic that more supermarkets will come on board and support FoodCycle as we grow.
