What's Better Than Baby Mangroves?

By Michelle Lanchart | VP of Communications and Engagement

Did you know that mangrove forests are critical to biodiversity and human survival? They help prevent coastal erosion and flooding and protect nurseries of fish and shellfish. However, in many communities, mangrove wood is used at an unsustainable rate to cook, build homes, and provide heat, depleting these forests.

In coastal communities in Africa, our engaging radio shows and media connect coastal communities to knowledge about how to sustainably source mangrove wood.In Mozambique, we are in the research phase of a radio drama that will weave in cultural beliefs and local mythologies, such as sacred ceremonies related to weather and beliefs about magical women who can control crocodiles.

Producing powerful media across a variety of platforms to raise public awareness, shift social norms, and generate action has been a crucial component in driving change. In order to do this effectively, our strategy engaged stakeholders at the individual, community, and policy levels.

Here’s what one listener had to say about our program:

“I am really enjoying the drama program, and my advice to the people of that community is that the elders of the community should learn to preserve the forest for the next generation to have access.”

Your support has allowed audience members access to vital information and resources that lead to more sustainable behaviors that benefit their communities and the planet.

Thank you!
