Mentorship has always been a focus for the Moyo team. By improving self-confidence, measures of success in school, and encouraging healthy life choices, mentorship has been shown to enhance both employability and health outcomes. Many girls who, statistically, would likely have dropped out of school, have instead improved their academic achievements and attendance records and stayed in school longer. Mentors do more than just tutor, they help girls develop the skills to navigate the transition from childhood to adolescence - this means overcoming negative peer pressure, avoiding risky sexual behavior, delaying marriage and pregnancy, and managing healthy menstruation.
We have integrated mentorship into almost all of our Moyo programs. Our Healthy Kids classes are obvious examples of this but more subtle incorporation of mentorship has been in the community healthcare oureach clinics, conservation projects at Mugie, and the tuition scholarships that we award. We are trying to teach girls that they are just as important as boys, that they are not property nor are they inferior, and give them the skills and the education needed to make healthy life choices and strive for success. Girls can be leaders too. They can raise their voices and have their ideas heard. They can speak out, powerfully, against gender-based violence and discimination.
The changes to the landscape of gender equity cannot be made by girls and women alone. It is critical that boys are also mentored in respect and learn the value of education, not simply adhereing to taboos and the status quo. So, while our mentorship often focuses on girls, we involve boys in our Healthy Kids classes and many of our community outreach mentorships as well.
We look forward to the opportunities to continue this work in, and around, the Mugie community!
