Bahamian children are not aware of the majestic whales living in their waters. Whale populations in this island archipelago are increasingly threatened by human activities. Raising awareness about these species and the dangers they face is essential for supporting whale conservation.
In 2025 The Bahamas was recognized internationally for its rich diversity of whale species including threatened and endangered populations of sperm whales and humpback whales. Sadly, whales are declining due to human activities such as increasing noise from ships, navy operations, habitat degradation, climate change, and entanglement in fishing gear. Yet, the majority of Bahamians are not aware that whales reside in our waters or the threats they are facing, hindering their conservation.
Scientists at the Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organisation (BMMRO) need your help to teach children of The Bahamas the importance of preserving these ocean icons. With your support, BMMRO will provide experiential learning and training programs for Bahamian students, who will work alongside our science team conducting vital research on whale population status. Students will also be trained to rescue whales during stranding events, helping directly to save Bahamian whales.
This project will cultivate a passion in young Bahamians for whales and the vital role they play in ocean ecosystems, critical to an island nation culturally and economically tied to the sea. Increased awareness will empower Bahamian youth to advocate for conservation of marine mammals and their habitats in The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean region. A new generation of ocean stewards will ensure Bahamian whales are safe from harm now and in the future.
