Dear Friends,
We wish all of you a happy new year, filled with joy, good health, and many happy moments with your loved ones.
The year ended with two very different moments for our community. On one hand, we received significant recognition for our work: an award honoring our efforts as a volunteer organization, presented to us by the President of the Hellenic Republic. On the other hand, it ended with a serious challenge.
Due to heavy rainfall combined with a pump failure, our precious teen space flooded. The water rose above our ankles, damaging books, furniture, and carpets. More than 200 books had to be thrown away, and we are still assessing the damage to the comic book collection, which is likely double that number.
Yet what followed was extraordinary. Within minutes of sharing that the library was in trouble, members of our community dropped everything and rushed to help. Together, we salvaged what we could, lifted heavy carpets, and carried countless buckets of water. Without their immediate support, the damage would have been far greater.
Members of the Albanian community helped clean and restore our carpets, members of the Afghan community formed a human chain to remove the water, our teens kept the library open while we worked downstairs, and our international volunteers worked tirelessly to save as many books as possible. It was a powerful reminder of what this library truly represents.
This disaster happened just days after Giving Tuesday. Thanks to your generous donations, along with the proceeds from our bazaar held shortly after the flood, we will be able to repair the damage and possibly even install a new pump, one that will not fail us again.
We are grateful to our community in Greece who showed up when it mattered most, and to our friends abroad whose continued support ensures that even moments like this cannot stand in the way of our shared goal: creating a thriving, inclusive community around our beloved library.
With gratitude,
Ioanna Nisyriou
