Hidden cost of crisis

By Auma Sharon | Project contributer

Title: The Hidden Cost Of Crisis
Theme: Cost Seen, Presence Held, Futures Protected Because Crisis Steals More Than What Meets The Eye at Gaba Hope for Kids

The hidden cost of crisis. Since 2021 we have stood where hunger looks like an empty plate and fear looks like a silent child. But the real cost is buried deeper. A lost question never asked. A dream never spoken. A childhood memory never made. We have learned this truth: crisis takes what you do not see until years later. The hidden cost of crisis means we guard presence, restore dignity, build belonging, and hold choice until the costs are revealed and paid.

How Crisis Hides Its True Cost
The Hidden Cost Of Crisis Guards Presence By Stealing Attendance Quietly: Fees and hunger do not just keep children home today. The hidden cost of crisis means a child misses years of learning, years of trust, years of becoming. Presence lost means a future shrinks because crisis stole presence when no one was watching.
The Hidden Cost Of Crisis Restores Dignity By Planting Shame Deep: Myths and silence do not just hurt in the moment. The hidden cost of crisis means shame teaches children their bodies and stories are wrong for life. Dignity wounded means a child hides because crisis buried shame too deep to see at first.
The Hidden Cost Of Crisis Builds Belonging By Erasing Names: Invisibility does not just make a child quiet today. The hidden cost of crisis means a child grows believing they do not matter, they do not belong, they do not count. Belonging stolen means a child drifts because crisis erased their place before anyone noticed.
The Hidden Cost Of Crisis Holds Choice By Forcing Early Surrender: Pressure and tradition do not just end school for one season. The hidden cost of crisis means a child loses the chance to choose work, family, and dreams on their own time. Choice taken means a child surrenders because crisis forced a decision before childhood ended.

What The Hidden Cost Of Crisis Looks Like
A Child Missing One Term Is A Future Narrowed: Lost months become lost years because learning does not wait. The hidden cost of crisis means presence stolen.
A Child Learning To Stay Silent Is A Voice Lost: Shame taught once becomes silence kept forever because dignity was not protected. The hidden cost of crisis means dignity wounded.
A Child Never Called By Name Is A Self Forgotten: Invisibility repeated becomes belief that they are nobody because belonging was not built. The hidden cost of crisis means belonging stolen.
A Child Married Too Young Is A Choice Closed: Pressure applied once becomes a life path set forever because choice was not held. The hidden cost of crisis means choice taken.

What Children, Mentors, Guardians, And Community Say
“I Did Not Know I Lost Years Until I Tried To Return”: Children say absence cost them more than they saw at the time. The hidden cost of crisis means presence stolen.
“My Students Carry Shame They Were Never Taught”: Mentors say silence in class hid wounds that crisis planted early. The hidden cost of crisis means dignity wounded.
“Our Child Stopped Believing They Mattered”: Guardians say invisibility taught their child they do not count. The hidden cost of crisis means belonging stolen.
“We Chose Early Because Crisis Gave Us No Time”: Families say pressure forced decisions whose cost came later. The hidden cost of crisis means choice taken.

Why The Hidden Cost Of Crisis Cannot Wait
Invisible Damage Hardens While Children Wait: What is hidden today becomes permanent tomorrow. The hidden cost of crisis must be addressed now because costs compound while families stand alone. Now means costs revealed and paid today.
Prevention Outruns Quiet Loss: Absence, shame, invisibility, and forced choice steal futures without headlines. The hidden cost of crisis is outrun because many guard presence, restore dignity, build belonging, and hold choice daily. Many acting means children keep what crisis would steal unseen.
Generosity Is Measured In Costs Prevented: We do not count what is given. We count children whose presence was held, whose dignity was honored, whose belonging was built, whose choice was held because crisis did not take it unseen. Your support is the reason hidden costs are stopped before they start.

Closing
The hidden cost of crisis. Because you support presence, we guard gates with meals and welcome so children do not lose years to absence. Because you protect dignity, we teach truth with respect so children do not carry shame they cannot name. Because you build belonging, we learn and speak every name so children do not grow believing they are invisible. Because you hold choice open, we walk with families so children do not surrender childhood to pressure.

Thank you for revealing the hidden cost of crisis with us. Thank you for being the breath, the meal that prevents absence, the lesson that prevents shame, the name that prevents invisibility, the support that prevents surrender.

Every child protected from hidden costs becomes a future protected. Every future protected becomes proof that seeing the hidden cost of crisis defends childhood.

From every child paying costs they cannot yet see today — stand with us. The hidden cost of crisis so their future becomes a future built.
