Report: 220 Children, One Mission
Theme: Dignity and Learning at Gaba Hope for Kids
At Gaba Hope for Kids, we support 220 orphaned and vulnerable children aged 10-16 across 5 rural villages. Poverty, early marriage, and lack of basic supplies keep too many of them out of school. Our mission is simple: make sure every child can attend class with dignity and focus on learning.
Why Dignity and Learning Go Together
A child without a uniform, shoes, or menstrual supplies often skips school or sits in class ashamed. That shame disrupts concentration, lowers participation, and pushes children toward dropout. When children have what they need to feel clean, safe, and prepared, they show up consistently and engage. Dignity is not a luxury. It is the foundation that makes learning possible.
What We Are Doing for 220 Children
We focus on practical, recurring support that keeps children in school term after term.
1. School Readiness Support: Distribute uniforms, shoes, and stationery kits to 180 children each term. This removes the most common reason families give for keeping children at home.
2. Menstrual Health and Hygiene: Provide reusable pads and hygiene kits to 95 girls, combined with monthly education sessions. This has reduced period-related absences and opened conversations about health.
3. Nutrition and Health Checks: Offer daily porridge at our learning center for 120 children and run quarterly health screenings with basic treatment. Better nutrition means better attendance and focus.
4. Mentorship and Safe Spaces: Run weekly peer mentorship groups led by trained youth mentors. Children discuss goal-setting, rights, and how to handle challenges at school and home.
5. Teacher and Caregiver Engagement: Work with 35 teachers and 150 caregivers to strengthen attendance tracking, positive discipline, and support for learning at home.
Results So Far
Across the 220 children in our program, average attendance increased by 19% over the last 4 months. Teachers report fewer children sent home for missing materials and more active participation in class. 12 girls who had dropped out returned after receiving menstrual supplies and mentorship. Caregivers note that children are more confident and talk more openly about school and future goals. No child in the program has missed more than 5 days in a row due to lack of supplies this term.
Challenges
The cost of uniforms, shoes, and hygiene materials continues to rise, stretching our termly budget. Some schools still lack enough desks and textbooks, limiting the impact of our support. Reaching children in the most remote villages requires transport we cannot always afford. We also need to train more mentors to keep up with program growth without losing quality.
Next Steps and Support Needed
To sustain and strengthen support for all 220 children, we plan to:
1. Secure Termly Supplies: Fund uniforms, shoes, and stationery for the next 6 months.
2. Expand Menstrual Health Program: Reach an additional 40 girls with pads and education.
3. Nutrition Support: Maintain daily porridge for 120 children.
4. Mentor Training: Train 10 new peer mentors to support homework clubs and safe spaces.
Conclusion
220 children, one mission. When each child has the basic tools to attend school with dignity, learning becomes possible. Your support turns that possibility into reality, one child and one term at a time.
