SUPPORTING NEEDY CHILDREN WITH BOOKS AND RESOURCES

By Auma Sharon | Project contributer

*Report: Dignity, Tools, and Books*

*Theme: Supporting Needy Children at Gaba Hope for Kids*

2. Why Dignity, Tools, and Books Matter
Dignity is the foundation for learning. Children without uniforms, proper shoes, or hygiene materials often stay home out of shame. Restoring dignity removes a barrier that keeps children out of class and helps them see themselves as students who belong.

Tools are the practical means for participation. Basic learning materials like pens, notebooks, geometry sets, and bags allow children to take notes, complete assignments, and engage fully in lessons. Without these, even motivated children fall behind.

Books provide access to knowledge. In schools where textbooks are scarce, providing revision guides and reading materials improves literacy, comprehension, and exam performance. Reading circles also build confidence and a habit of learning beyond the classroom.

When dignity, tools, and books are in place together, children show up consistently, participate actively, and believe they have a future worth working for.

3. What We Are Doing
*Dignity Support*
We provide school uniforms, shoes, and hygiene kits for 35 children this year. Each term we also run hygiene and self-care sessions during monthly mentorship meetings, so children understand how to maintain their health and confidence.

*Tools Support*
Every term we distribute notebooks, pens, pencils, and basic stationery packs. We maintain a small learning hub with shared materials for homework clubs, allowing children without resources at home to study in a safe space.

*Books Support*
We supply textbooks and revision guides for core subjects like English, Math, and Science. Weekly reading circles help children practice comprehension, public speaking, and critical thinking in a low-pressure environment.

*Integration with Mentorship*
Material support is linked directly to life skills and goal-setting sessions. Trained facilitators track attendance, participation, and progress to ensure resources reach the children who need them most and are used effectively.

 4. Results So Far
Over 120 children are participating in weekly programs across 3 villages. Among children who received uniforms and materials, we have seen noticeable improvement in school attendance and punctuality.

Caregivers report that children are more willing to go to school, complete homework, and speak positively about their future. Teachers note better classroom participation and fewer cases of children missing school due to lack of materials.

Girls’ participation has increased from 25% to 42% in 6 months, reflecting growing trust in the program and reduced barriers related to dignity and safety.

5. Challenges
Funding remains the main constraint. Limited funds make it difficult to restock uniforms and stationery each term as children grow and materials wear out.

Some partner schools lack enough textbooks, which increases the load on our program to fill the gap. Transport costs also make it hard to reach children in remote villages consistently, especially during rainy seasons.

We also need more trained facilitators to run reading support and homework clubs at scale without compromising quality.

 6. Next Steps and Support Needed
To expand and sustain impact for 200 children, we plan to:

1. *Dignity Kits*: Provide uniforms, shoes, and hygiene kits for 65 more children.

2. *Learning Tools*: Supply term packs of notebooks, pens, and geometry sets.

3. *Books and Reading Materials*: Purchase textbooks and set up 2 small reading corners in community spaces.

4. *Monitoring*: Track school attendance, participation, and feedback from teachers and caregivers quarterly to measure impact and adjust the program.

7. Conclusion
Dignity gives a child the confidence to walk into a classroom. Tools give them the means to learn. Books give them the knowledge to grow. Together, they create a foundation for children to move from surviving to thriving.

*Call to Action*
We invite partners and donors to support the “Dignity, Tools, and Books” initiative at Gaba Hope for Kids. Your contribution directly helps a child stay in school with pride and the resources to learn.
