*Theme: Using Sport to Build Resilience, Health, and Hope*
1. Introduction
At Gaba Hope for Kids, we work with orphaned and vulnerable children aged 10-16 in rural villages. Many face trauma, food insecurity, and limited access to structured activities.
Promoting sports is not just about play. For our children, sport is a tool for physical health, emotional healing, social cohesion, and life skills development. This report outlines why sports matter for our program, what we’re doing, and what we need to scale impact.
2. Why Sports Matter for Our Children
Physical Health*: Regular activity reduces illness risk and improves nutrition outcomes for children who are often undernourished.
*Mental Health*: Structured sport provides a safe outlet for stress and trauma, improving mood and reducing anxiety.
*Life Skills*: Team sports teach communication, teamwork, discipline, and conflict resolution—skills that transfer to school and home life.
*Protection*: Keeping children engaged in safe, supervised activities reduces risk of exploitation, early marriage, and idleness.
*Community Connection*: Sports events bring caregivers, leaders, and children together, strengthening community support for child welfare.
3. Current Activities
- *Weekly Sports Sessions*: Football and netball for boys and girls, run by trained youth facilitators.
- *Life Skills Integration*: 10-minute reflection after each session linking the game to topics like teamwork, goal setting, and respect.
- *Inter-village Matches*: Quarterly events that build confidence and community engagement.
- *Inclusion Focus*: Specific efforts to ensure girls and younger children participate safely.
4. Achievements So Far
- 23+ children regularly participating across 3 villages.
- Improved attendance at life skills sessions due to sports acting as an entry point.
- Positive feedback from caregivers reporting better behavior and confidence at home.
- Increased participation of girls, from 25% to 42% of total participants in 6 months.
5. Challenges
- *Equipment Shortage*: Limited balls, jerseys, and first aid supplies.
- *Space*: Lack of safe, level playing fields in some villages.
- *Training*: Facilitators need more training in child safeguarding and trauma-informed coaching.
- *Funding*: Current activities rely on small, irregular donations.
6. Next Steps & Support Needed
To strengthen and expand the program, we aim to:
1. *Equip Teams*: Provide balls, cones, jerseys, and basic first aid kits for 5 teams. Estimated cost: $300.
2. *Train Facilitators*: Run a 2-day workshop on safeguarding, inclusive coaching, and basic first aid.
3. *Safe Spaces*: Work with communities to secure and mark 2 safe playing fields.
4. *Monitoring*: Track participation, school attendance, and wellbeing indicators quarterly.
7. Conclusion
Sports at Gaba Hope for Kids is more than recreation. It’s a low-cost, high-impact way to keep children healthy, engaged, and learning. With modest support, we can reach 200 children and create a model that other community programs can replicate.
*Call to Action*
