Report: Back to School
Theme: Thanks for Your Continued Support at Gaba Hope for Kids
1. Introduction
At Gaba Hope for Kids, we work with orphaned and vulnerable children aged 10-16 in rural villages. Each new school term brings both excitement and barriers. Many children we support lack uniforms, stationery, and fees, which can keep them out of class.
This report shares how your continued support helps children return to school ready to learn, and what we are seeing as the new term begins.
2. Why Back to School Support Matters
Continuity of Learning: Missing the start of term makes it harder for children to catch up and stay motivated.
Dignity and Belonging: Having a uniform, shoes, and basic supplies helps children walk into class without shame.
Family Relief: Caregivers facing financial strain can keep children in school instead of pulling them out for work or early marriage.
Momentum: A strong start to the term improves attendance, participation, and exam results.
3. What We Are Doing This Term
School Starter Kits
- Distribute uniforms, shoes, and hygiene kits to 150 children
- Provide notebooks, pens, pencils, and geometry sets for each child
Fees and Materials Support
- Cover partial school fees and exam registration for 20 children at risk of dropping out
- Supply textbooks and revision guides for core subjects
Mentorship and Check-ins
- Run goal-setting sessions with students to prepare for the term ahead
- Follow up with teachers and caregivers on attendance and progress
4. Results So Far
- 55% of children in our program reported for the start of term on time
- Teachers note higher participation and fewer cases of children sent home for missing materials
- Caregivers share that support reduces stress and keeps children focused on learning
- Girls’ attendance remains steady at 42%, reflecting continued engagement
5. Challenges
- Rising costs of uniforms and stationery stretch our budget each term
- Some schools still lack enough textbooks, increasing pressure on our supply
- Transport costs make it hard to reach children in remote villages for follow-up
- Need for more volunteers to support mentorship and homework help
6. Next Steps and Support Needed
To keep every child in class this term and next, we plan to:
1. Restock Starter Kits: Provide uniforms and supplies for 130 more children.
2. Learning Materials: Purchase textbooks and revision guides for 3 schools.
3. Mentorship Support: Train 5 new peer mentors to run homework clubs.
4. Monitoring: Track attendance, test scores, and feedback from teachers and caregivers monthly
7. Conclusion
Going back to school is about more than books and bags. It’s about showing children they are seen, supported, and expected to succeed. Your continued support makes that possible.
